watercolour and ink on paper collage on card0.0cm x 0.0cm
This design takes a map of the North Sea coast and turns it on its side. The viewer of the work would not recognise this shape at first but might see that it was a form of map. In this idea, although the shape is accurate the unfamiliarity of it makes it appear abstract at fist sight. Navigators of the North Sea would recognise the jigsaw pattern of pieces as the geographical Sea Areas which would then unlock the puzzle. Others might never understand what they are looking at, but in art that's OK whereas in science it's not. The interlocking and layered imagery is a collage of images I gathered from research visits to Helgoland in 2016 and from my voyage with scientists on the RV Polarstern.
