A woman with headphones typing on a laptop glimpsed on a train journey and surreptitiously caught in a sketch became the subject for a painting of contemporary life. I don't know why but I felt it was a compelling image worthy of many hours of design studies and painting . The view out of the window is a blur of dark stripes very similar to my abstract paintings derived from landscape colours. Is it a view? Or maybe it's an abstract painting in contrast with the Hopperesque realism of the inside of the train carriage. Like Hopper I have tried to create the atmosphere of an isolated life in the modern technological world. Whose is the cup of coffee with the lid on? I don't know.
